In Genesis, the earth is created (1:1) before light (1:3), sun and stars (1:16); birds and whales (1:21) before reptiles and insects (1:24); and flowering plants (1:11) before any animals (1:20). The order of events known from science is in each case just the opposite.

Just found myself re-reading this post which I wrote with help from the The Scripture Project.

Objection!: God created the universe

Any religion that asks people to stop asking questions and just have faith is a religion without good answers. Atheists don’t tell people to have faith in God’s non-existence: we encourage people to ask questions and think about their beliefs. If your religion is telling you to stop asking questions, ask yourself: Why would they ask that of me?

The first intriguing finding is that there is a lot of overlap between the brain areas activated during feelings of romantic love for a partner, and those involved in maternal love for own children. The brain cells implicated are the same as those we know become active whenever an extremely rewarding activity is being undertaken. These are precisely the same neurological locations which are implicated when we consume food and drink we like, take drugs like cocaine, and when we are given monetary rewards. So love is indeed like a drug.

Love really is blind… - Telegraph

This is a great article about how the brain reacts to love (and how your brain deactivates clear thinking and critical judgement when thinking of loved ones).

More than ever it is obvious that human emotion is a chemical reaction in the brain, and there is no ‘soul’.

So, strange as it may sound, I’d be reluctant to radically change the human condition. But if I could change one thing, it would be to expand the range of fellow feeling. The greatest problem today, with so many different groups rubbing shoulders on a crowded planet, is excessive loyalty to one’s own nation, group, or religion. Humans are capable of deep disdain for anyone who looks different or thinks another way … Nations think they are superior to their neighbours, and religions think they own the truth. When push comes to shove, they are ready to thwart or even eliminate one another. In recent years, we have seen two huge office towers brought down by airplanes deliberately flown into them as well as massive bombing raids on the capital of a nation, and on both occasions the deaths of thousands of innocents was celebrated as a triumph of good over evil. The lives of strangers are often considered worthless.

If you had been born in India, I daresay you would be saying the same thing about Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva. If you had been born in Afghanistan, I daresay you would be saying the same thing about Allah. If you would have been born in Viking Norway, you would have been saying the same thing about Wotan. If you would have been born in Olympian Greece you’d be saying the same thing about Zeus and Apollo.

The human mind is extremely susceptible to hallucination.

Richard Dawkins.

I absolutely love this quote, and it really sums up religion. How can you be sure that you have the right religion, when religion requires no evidence (only faith)? Surely they are all on a level playing field. You only picked your particular religion because of where you were born. So stop being so sure about it!

Sumerians Look On In Confusion As God Creates World

“According to recently excavated clay tablets inscribed with cuneiform script, thousands of Sumerians—the first humans to establish systems of writing, agriculture, and government—were working on their sophisticated irrigation systems when the Father of All Creation reached down from the ether and blew the divine spirit of life into their thriving civilization.”
